Publication Research

After doing research on journals regarding gender inequality in Iran. I came across one journal which really brought my attention and that was,” Away from Home Iranian women, Displacement cultural resistance and change. “  This journal covers a point which is on patriarchy and how patriarchy is an ideological system of domination. This correlates with my conference paper because, in my paper, I discuss how the government has used women as a way to not only show their domination but a way to oppress and control women in Iran.

In this journal, Haideh Moghissi discusses how women are subject of displacement.  According to “Moghissi, Haideh. “Away from Home: Iranian Women, Displacement In Cultural Resistance and Change.” Journal of Comparative Family Studies, vol. 30, no. 2, 1999, pp. 207–217, it states, “ The gender difference in accepting displacement is rooted in the experience of displacement caused by marriage. As expressed by an Iranian woman in

Toronto, in Iran, many young women have to move in with the husband’s family after their

marriage – at least for a couple of years before the young couple can afford to have their

own home.” This is something I found significant and in relation to my paper. Iranian women are stereotyped and have this role that they must play. They need to leave their home for marriage and compromise with what is given. Patriarchy and society has made women a subject to dominance and displacement.

The reason why I chose this journal is that it outlines the impact of patriarchy on gender relations. My conference paper’s purpose is to show that theme also. In my paper, I want to show how in the different periods such as in the Pahlavi dynasty, the Qajar Dynasty, and the Islamic Republic of Iran how government and society have used women for their own purposes. In the Pahlavi dynasty, giving women the typical role which is of housewives, In the Qajar dynasty using women to show how the government can modernize. Today in Iran, women are still a victim to displacement and Haideh’s journal shows.
